" Kumbakonam Degree Coffee "

Being a Coffee lover, I was always inquisitive to know everything about this coffee, As i could find these sign boards on the Chennai - Bangalore highways!

so while traveling back home, i stopped by this place and made sure i had a taste of the very famous "Kumbakonam degree coffee"  served in a brass cup.

It had the actual taste and aroma that every coffee lover would look for,

The name "Kumbakonam", roughly translated in English as the "Pot's Corner", is believed to be an allusion to the mythical pot (kumbha) of the Hindu god Brahma that contained the seed of all living beings on earth

There are multiple speculations as to why its called "DEGREE" coffee: The most plausible explanation is that it's not "degree" coffee. It's Chicory which came to be pronounced as tikeri and eventually became degree. Chicory helps extract more flavour from the coffee beans. :)

What's the speciality of serving it in a brass cup?
It is a traditional method of serving a filter coffee and it is a custom of treating guest with warmth and this brass attracts heat and keeps the coffee "HOT"

Kumbakonam Degree Coffee concentrates much to the purity of undiluted milk used in the preparation of the coffee than the coffee powder. They actually use a lactometer to check the purity of milk and that the reason they have named it as degree coffee, also called as meter coffee.

Whats the right way to make this Coffee?

They first add sugar, top it with decotion and finally pour milk, then pour  between tawara tumblers to serve the coffee frothy. Also milk is boiled in a double boiler, this way the milk will remain hot at the same time it will not get burnt at the bottom and also get thick while boiling.

Anyone traveling to Banglore from Chennai? or just traveling to Chennai? Do stop by and experience this interesting Kumbakonam Degree. :)
