The Last Thing He Wanted is a muddled 1970s-style paranoia thriller set amid the American interventionism of the 1980s.
The movie has earned bad reviews upon bad reviews - largely because the plot is not satisfactorily explained but also because of its ending which feels abrupt and leaves the viewer feeling that he has missed something.
I freely admit that I, too, had no idea what the heck was going on with the plot of this movie. So I did a lot of research on the complex history of U.S. intervention in Central America during the Cold War, watching the movie again and made liberal use of Wikipedia and I think I figured out what actually happened in this movie.
So here is a 'Ending Explained' video to try and explain what the H*ll actually went down in the end and try and tie some loose ends.
