Awareness of Covid-19 high in Bahrain

THERE is a high level of awareness about precautionary measures to limit the spread of Covid-19 among people in Bahrain, a new survey has found, writes the GDN's Sandeep Singh Grewal.

A total of 10,546 respondents, of whom 53 per cent were women, were surveyed by the Bahrain Centre for Strategic, International and Energy Studies (Derasat) including people of different age groups and educational backgrounds.

The findings revealed that 95pc of the respondents backed the measures and Royal directives taken by the country to contain the coronavirus, while unifying the national spirit.

The results also showed that 97pc of the respondents supported the decision to suspend education in all schools and universities, while 99pc supported postponing travel except for emergencies.

“Eighty-seven per cent of the survey sample described the performance of ‘Team Bahrain’ as excellent, while 95pc considered themselves part of the ‘Team’,” stated the findings.

The respondents in favour of quarantining passengers arriving from high risk countries was 99pc, while 96pc supported 14-day home-quarantining for passengers arriving during this period.

The survey also showed high levels of awareness regarding the symptoms and transmission methods of the virus in addition to adopting healthy habits to counter the disease.

This included social distancing, the use of sanitisers and masks, avoiding gatherings and focusing on home-cooked meals.

“Survey results have shown that some social behaviours were unaffected by the crisis such as buying foodstuff, online shopping within Bahrain, buying vitamins and mineral supplements, and exercising at home,” added the think tank.

A total of 84pc of respondents also said they would call the dedicated Covid-19 hotline, 444, if they were experiencing symptoms and home quarantine themselves.

However, 12pc said they would visit the nearest healthcare centre and 4pc said they would take fever medication.

“This survey and other studies conducted by Derasat reflect its national role in supporting current decisions on objective grounds,” said Derasat board chairman Dr Shaikh Abdulla bin Ahmed Al Khalifa.

“The study helps form an accurate and thorough picture in the society to help timely decisions, and further reflects a commitment to the safety and security of Bahraini citizens and residents.”

The findings of the survey also revealed the success in media management by the National Task Force to Combat the Coronavirus, with 90pc of respondents having acknowledged its transparency, clarity, responsiveness and integrity.
