Once upon a time there was a man with a beautiful house, a happy family and plentiful sustenance. His house had a tree in the front yard. One day, he decided to cut this tree to make space for some swings and other items for his kids, and few tables and chairs for his guests and family members, in case he invited them over.
He started his task on Sunday morning and was done with it in a couple of hours. He took the log and the fallen branches to sell them. But he failed to see the nest that was on the tree and which fell with it. There was a little baby sparrow in that nest which fell to the ground, she was nervous, injured and frightened.
The man's kids saw the poor creature when they came to play outside. They immediately felt the love and mercy for her and took her inside to take care of her. Their mother also shared their emotions and tended to her as best as she could. When the man came back and saw the affection his family showed towards the little bird, he decided to keep it for them and brought a little cage for it. The cage had silver bars and a small swing inside which glimmered when sunlight shone on it.
Kids were very happy to have this beautiful house for their little friend. They hanged the cage near the window, with the bird in it and put a couple of small tiny bowls for food and water. The bird, initially shocked and scared, calmed down under the amusing attention from the kids. She started telling them about the disaster that hit her resulting in loss of her home and family. The kids liked her chirping and found it entertaining, but obviously, they didn't understand what she meant. After a while, the little bird realized that her story deos not seem to have any impact on the kids so she became silent.
Every morning, his mother would come near the window and the little bird would call out to her and she would console him. But after a while, she stopped showing up. May be, she was caught by someone or she died with the agony of losing her child, who knows.
The bird, then, went completely silent and immobile. By that time, the kids had lost interest in her as they had new electronic gadgets to play with which did not go silent until they switched them off. Their father thought the bird as unnecessary and, like the tree on which his home was, sold it to someone. From then onwards, the bird went from one house to another, one family to another, but couldn't find someone who she can relate to or somewhere she can call her home. Every once in a while, she would see birds like her flying high across the sky but she never got to do it. All she knew were silver bars of his cage, two panes of food and water and a small swing. All the rivers from which she could he drank, all the mountains upon which she could have flown and fields from which she could have eaten, were missed forever. One morning, his latest owner found her dead, and just like that her story was over, suddenly.
Dedicated to all those people who were displaced from their homes for various reasons.
