REDEFINING SUSTAINABLE TRAVEL AND REGENERATING THE ENVIRONMENT IN MAURITIUS

Protected Turtle Bay Marine Park and Pointe aux Piments on the northwest coast to unspoilt Le Morne Brabant - a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the southwest coast, each resort connects guests to new landscapes and sustainable eco-conscious endeavours. Marriott in Mauritius acknowledges their responsibility in minimising its impact on the environment by engaging in conservation practices. Through local partnerships, sustainable practices and education, the resorts create positive change and continue to regenerate the environment.

The Westin Turtle Bay Resort & Spa Mauritius recently scooped the ‘’Coup de Coeur’’ award in the Sustainable Tourism Mauritius 2023 Awards for its continuing efforts to focus on sustainability. The resort is committed to preserving and respecting Mother Nature with its sustainable food and beverage experiences which centre around organically grown produce and lessening the resorts carbon footprint. Being eco-conscious is more than just separating plastics from glass. It’s about concern for consumption habits from purchase to paperless menus, to waste disposal. Sustainable practices include Meatless Mondays which reduce greenhouse gas emissions and carbon miles, zero waste cocktails with edible garnishes, responsibly sourced seafood, daily buffet breakfast rotation of local and seasonal fruits and guests also get to enjoy cage free eggs.

The onsite, a carefully planned vegetable garden harvests every kind of vegetable and herb. “Carefully nurtured by the botanic team, the organic garden is not only productive but also lush and beautiful. Once a week, guests are invited to celebrate the harvest with a specially curated four-course candlelit barbeque experience in the garden. Aligned with the resort’s sustainable initiatives, each course is paired with an organic wine.  Plant based canapés, special signature cocktails and an array of wholesome flavours awaits”, says Karishma Jingree, Sustainable Development Manager for the three properties.

Guests may participate in the Coco Wonders Workshop to learn more about the diversity of coconuts as a refreshing healthy beverage with essential enzymes, to cooking with coconuts, and learning how to masticate coconut into an exfoliation ingredient and using the shell as a natural, decomposable vessel.

Le Méridien Ile Maurice strives to reduce its water consumption, recycle its waste, protect biodiversity and optimises energy consumption with its automated guest room management system which includes smart switches and sensors to efficiently manage guest room energy consumption.
