The house was silent. The rooms which had once been filled with memories were now devoid of people. They had all grown up, moved on, or passed on. The mantelpiece and the walls had once been covered with photo frames of various life events and achievements.
I sat in my favorite spot on the sofa, focusing my attention on the coffee table on which stood an empty glass jar. It looked odd without its label. It had once been filled with bills ... Tens, Twenties ... whatever we could spare. We had spent a lifetime collecting or rather saving. We had struggled for over twenty years at dead-end desk jobs. Overworked, underpaid, and mostly ignored, we had saved every dinar and every fils we possibly could.
I removed the crumpled list from the jar. At some point, we had been brave enough to scribble down some of the places we would visit and the things we would do when we had taken care of our responsibilities.
The Seven Wonders of the World
The Aurora Borealis
Watch snow fall
Getting lost in the streets of Italy
A Desert Safari
Bungee Jumping
Sky Dive over Palm Jumeirah
The Eiffel Tower and the Statue of Liberty
Take the Orient Express
A rock concert
Watch the World Cup in an actual stadium
Go Scuba diving
A wicked smile played on my lips. After all the years of working and waiting now it's our time to live. First, we quit our jobs and then our boring life. We had more than plenty saved so we cashed in on our Dream Jar. We planned on doing every one of the things on that list.
"The taxi is here. Let's go or we'll miss the flight".
"Coming!"
I grabbed the tattered list and rushed out the door. If we could, then we would ... Now we can and we will!
