A call to chop down and remove all destructive ‘Satanic trees’ from residential neighbourhoods has been made by the Northern Municipal Council.
The invasive roots of the Conocarpus have been blamed for wrecking underground water and sewage pipes, surrounding walls as well as snapping electricity and telecom cables,” said the council’s technical committee chairman Abdulla Al Qobaisi.
Currently, the planting of new trees is banned but the existing ones continue to be a headache. Mr Al Qobaisi has demanded a rethink on the issue, saying that it was time to impose a full chopping order.
Rules over planting the Conocarpus were first introduced by the Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture Ministry in 2022.
