Special course in safety for Bahrain’s delivery riders

Delivery riders have undergone a special course to ensure they stay safe and more aware of the challenges other road-users face in a unique, potentially life-saving, course.

The Rider Safety Awareness Programme was held for employees of Jahez, a ‘last-mile delivery’ operator, by Y K Almoayyed & Sons (YKA), as part of its commitment to corporate social responsibility and the promotion of road safety, in partnership with UD Trucks.

Efforts are underway to push for a significant policy shift that could see residents in Bahrain’s newly-urbanised areas receiving vital infrastructure services and public facilities without having to wait for years. At present, the Housing and Urban Planning Ministry mandates that at least 50 per cent of any residential development must be inhabited before services such as roads, lighting, public transport, schools, clinics, parks and sewage systems are set up. Municipal leaders believe this policy is outdated and leads to prolonged suffering, especially for families who are among the first to move into new areas, often having to endure years of isolation and lack of basic amenities.

A renewed call to upgrade infrastructure and essential facilities at Hamad Town’s historic Souq Waqif has been made by the Northern Municipal Council, as part of ongoing efforts to enhance the market’s long-term appeal and functionality. The council’s technical committee chairman and area councillor Jassim Hejres, who has been spearheading efforts to improve the market, said the suq deserves more than just cosmetic improvements. He urged authorities to push forward with installing proper roads, a functioning sewage system plus public toilets, and called for a clear timeline for implementation.

Several initiatives have also been launched to spread awareness about the importance of staying hydrated and eating a nutritious diet to avoid health complications that may occur as temperatures continue to soar. The Indian Community Relief Fund (ICRF), a registered charitable association, has lined up a number of programmes, as part of its 10th Thirst Quenchers initiative, to help outdoor workers around the country beat the heat.

More than 13,200 single-use plastic water bottles have been collected by a Bahrain-based community group as part of a campaign that aims to educate people about the importance of reducing plastic waste and cleaning up the environment. Budaiya Hub, part of the Global Shapers Community (GSC), revealed the figures as they posted a video on Instagram, highlighting their ‘Plastic Free July’ initiative and encouraging the local community to do their part. It follows a call made by GSC to hubs around the world to contribute a short film showing the impact they have made in their local communities in the fight against plastic pollution. “When we saw a statistic by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development that said plastic leakage into the environment is expected to increase by 50 per cent by 2040, we wanted to do our part to help,” Budaiya Hub environmental consultant and shaper Rahma Aleskafi told the GDN.

Free shuttle buses on six main routes, with special services for people with disabilities, have been launched to and from the processions area in Manama. Jaffari Waqf (Endowments) Directorate board chairman Yousif Al Saleh officially launched the transportation service in the presence of board vice-chairman Abduljalil Al Tareef and the contracted transport company Al Sadiq’s general manager Majid Taher. Mr Al Saleh expressed his deep appreciation for the leadership’s directives, the co-operation of the Interior Ministry and the continuous support from of the Justice, Islamic Affairs and Endowments Ministry.
