Bahraini students showcase smart solutions to protect environment, serve community

Projects by students participating in the Unesco King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa Prize for the Use of ICT in Education 2025 were showcased at a conference related to the prize, held at Bahrain University.

The students worked on innovations aimed to protect the environment and help make everyday life easier, according to a report in our sister newspaper Akhbar Al Khaleej.

Among the participants was American School of Bahrain student Yousif Hasan, who created a chatbot powered by artificial intelligence (AI) to answer commonly-asked questions from parents and students.

“The chatbot can provide answers to questions about things like fees and phone numbers for specific departments,” he said.

“The idea came from us, the students, and I was inspired by my ambition to start an AI company when I grow up, since AI is the future. I said to myself, whomy not start now?”

Another student, Mariam Salman, worked on a project to convert polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic to versatile filament for three-dimensional (3D) printing.

She said that since PET plastic can last in the environment for more than 400 years, her project can help reduce its long-term effects.

A third student, Maryam Husain, designed a ‘smart glove’ to help blind and visually-impaired individuals, which notifies its wearer through sound and vibration if they are approached by another person.

The glove is made from recycled e-waste, she said.
