Mum’s the word for charity run challenge

Bahrain will take centre stage this week in a global fundraising challenge marking the 150th anniversary of the Mothers’ Union, as Worldwide President Kathleen Snow undertakes a 10-kilometre run in the kingdom while attending the Anglican Diocesan Synod of Cyprus and the Gulf.

The run, scheduled for 3.30pm on Friday, will start at the Bahrain Fort parking area near the museum and Green Bar Café, with members of the public invited to run alongside the charity champion or cheer her on.

The Bahrain leg forms part of an ambitious international challenge in which Ms Snow plans to complete 10km runs in 15 dioceses around the world, combining her long-standing passion for running with her global leadership role in the Christian charity.

Speaking to the GDN ahead of the run, Ms Snow said that being in Bahrain for the Diocesan Synod gave this stage of the challenge special meaning.

“As I attend Diocesan Synod here in Bahrain, it felt deeply meaningful to include this place in the challenge,” she said. “Running becomes a way of praying with my whole body – praying for the local Mothers’ Union and their work, the Diocese of Cyprus and the Gulf, the wider Province of Jerusalem and the Middle East, and for all whom we are called to serve.”

The Bahrain run highlights both the international reach of Mothers’ Union and its growing presence in the Kingdom. Although still relatively new locally, Mothers’ Union Bahrain has been steadily developing as part of the Diocese of Cyprus and the Gulf with 29 members in Bahrain.

Ms Snow’s global challenge began in Fredericton, Canada, where she completed her opening run in harsh winter conditions. Over the coming months, she plans to run in dioceses across the UK, North America, Africa and beyond, taking in London, Wales, San Diego, Durban and Tanzania.
