Indian pet owners stranded in Bahrain and other countries affected by the regional conflict have been granted a lifeline by the Indian Government.
Pet cats and dogs can be imported into India even if they do not satisfy all the conditions that are usually required for them to be allowed entry into the country.
The Indian Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Ministry has issued a one-time order to relax these requirements, in light of the ‘unique and extraordinary situation’ in the Middle East.
If available, the pet owner should bring along a pet book or pet passport indicating the pet’s vaccination history.
Upon arrival, pets with complete documentation will undergo a clinical examination by the Animal Quarantine and Certification Service (AQCS) to obtain approval for the entry of the pet.
Pets without a veterinary health certificate or proof of vaccination will be vaccinated for rabies at the port of entry, at the expense of the pet owner, and will be examined by the AQCS.
