Austin, Texas- According to Texas A&M Agrilife Cricket outbreaks are one of the most predictable pest events of the year in most areas of Texas.
A recent outbreak of crickets is causing a huge inconvenience to Austin's residents and business owners. The Crickets seen all over right now are most likely Black Field Crickets, or Field Crickets which usually make their appearance in late summer and fall in many parts of Texas.
Although crickets can be locally abundant in any year, numbers appear to be highest in August and September when a summer drought is broken by rainfall and cooler weather.
Danny Vasquez, , a Pest Control Technician with X Out, said fall is usally when the crickets come out, but every so often, they come out in crowds causing small businesses to lose customers and have to pay for clean ups.
During these outbreaks crickets can cause a burden around places of business. Dead crickets quickly pile up; causing odors; and many people are repelled by the sight of large numbers of crickets on walls around offices and stores.
Although cricket season can be a huge nuisance, experts say that there is no need to be worried about these insects causing harm as they don't bite, sting or transmit disease.
