Managing Editor Stanley Szecowka powered his way to victory in the third GDN Media Boules Up Challenge Cup competition organised to celebrate National Sport Day in Bahrain.
He narrowly beat GDNonline intern Zain Kazerooni in a thrilling final as the two had beat all-comers in a competitive contest between the newsroom and online teams. Zain was hoping to follow in the female footsteps of reporter Zainab Almahdi who won the inaugural contest two years ago.
The action took place in the sunshine on a grassy patch of the Estiqlal Park fitness circuit in East Riffa. “I was determined to retain my title,” said Szecowka who spent many a summer holiday during his misspent youth playing the game at the home of boules in France. “I think the trophy looks good on my desk!”
Boules is a collective name for a wide range of games similar to bowls in which the objective is to throw or roll heavy silver balls as closely as possible to a small orange target ball, called the jack.
